BYD Atto 3 battery health: the Blade battery and what to check

How the BYD Atto 3's LFP Blade battery ages, what the Australian battery warranty covers, and how to check battery health before buying a used Atto 3 in Melbourne.

Quick answer: The BYD Atto 3 uses BYD's Blade battery, an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) design known for durability and handling full charges well. In Australia the traction battery is covered for 8 years or 160,000 km, with a guarantee of at least 70% capacity. A used Atto 3 is often a good buy, but the only way to know a specific car's battery condition is a state-of-health test.

The Atto 3 arrived in Australia in 2022 and quickly became one of the most common EVs on the road. Early cars are now coming onto the used market, many with years of battery warranty still left.

What is the Blade battery?

The Blade battery uses LFP cells shaped as long, flat "blades" packed side by side. LFP chemistry generally ages slowly and copes well with being charged to 100%. Australian Atto 3s have come with two battery sizes: Standard Range (49.92 kWh) and Extended Range (60.48 kWh), both LFP. The badge or the original paperwork tells you which one you're looking at.

What the Australian battery warranty covers

BYD covers the Atto 3's traction battery for 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first, with a guarantee that capacity stays at or above 70%. The vehicle itself has a separate, shorter warranty. BYD's warranty terms changed after launch, so for an early car it's worth confirming the exact terms that apply to that VIN with a BYD dealer.

The battery warranty runs from the car's first registration, so check that date when buying second-hand.

LFP and the range display

LFP batteries have a very flat voltage curve, which makes it harder for any car to estimate the exact charge level from voltage alone. That's one reason the range estimate on an LFP car can wander. Charging to 100% from time to time helps the car recalibrate its estimate. It also means the dashboard range is a weak guide to battery health.

What wears an Atto 3 battery

  • Time and heat: all lithium-ion batteries age faster in sustained heat. Shade and a cooler garage help.
  • Very frequent fast charging: fine occasionally, more wear if it's the main way the car is charged.
  • Kilometres: cars used for rideshare or long commutes cycle the battery more.

Buying a used Atto 3: what to check

  • First registration date and remaining battery warranty
  • Standard or Extended Range
  • How it was charged, and whether it was used for rideshare or delivery work
  • Any battery or charging warnings
  • Service history at a BYD dealer
  • An independent battery health report

How our battery health check works

We come to the car anywhere within about 60 km of Melbourne's south-east. We read the battery's state of health, every cell group's voltage, module temperatures and stored battery fault codes through the diagnostic port. Nothing is opened up or changed. It takes about 45 minutes, and the plain-English PDF report arrives the same day.

The price is $149 including GST, and you pay after the test. Tell us the exact car when you book and we'll confirm what can be read for it before we come out.

EV Pitstop is an independent business and isn't affiliated with BYD.
